Meet Liberty

The search for a new boat is not an easy task. When there are three captains involved, the process begins with a committee meeting! "Bigger", "better" , "faster" topped the list of everyone's requirements. The final criteria were demanding: structurally sound and seaworthy in a full range of sea conditions; reliable engines with comfortable cruising speed; comfortable accommodations; ample stowage; and, most importantly, fishability.

Liberty Port ViewCaptain Marty combed the East Coast. Shelli accompanied him to harbors and shipyards throughout the New England states. Captain Kirstyn covered the southern states with him and Captain Derrick tagged along in Florida. We looked at a lot of boats! The search resulted in two 'potential' candidates.

While we deliberated over the 'potentials' a new listing came up in Jacksonville, FL. Captain Marty was managing his tugboats in one of McAllister's Florida ports and decided to make the drive to look at it. His report home was "this might be IT." He called Captain Kirstyn who was on a road trip to Daytona Beach. She took the Jacksonville exit on her way through to take a look at the boat. Her report home was "what are we waiting for, buy this boat now!" So we did!

The 46-foot Hatteras Sportfisherman met everyone's requirements. It is one of the most popular sportfishing convertibles of all time and has earned an enviable reputation for quality, comfort and performance - and it's a proven fish-raiser! At 41,000 pounds, it’s heavier than most boats of its size, which gives it a rock-solid ride. The hull's deep forefoot makes for excellent handling in head seas. A pair of Detroit Diesel engines, located in a spacious engine compartment, provide comfortable cruising speeds. The roomy flybridge, with ample seating, is easily accessible.

The interior layout includes a salon with full galley and two staterooms with full baths (hot showers!). There are hanging lockers, drawers and stowage compartments throughout - plenty of places to keep our stuff. Amenities include zoned air-conditioning and heat, stereo system and satellite tv.

The boat has been meticulously maintained by the former owner. Captain Marty was so impressed with his attention to detail that we decided to leave the boat in his care until the voyage home. Captain Marty and the ship's purser (Shelli) will make the voyage from Florida to Rock Harbor in April. We will be traveling to Florida throughout the winter to prepare for the trip and, of course, the fishing season.

The naming of a vessel is, generally, another difficult task. However, when Captain Marty offered up the name of his grandfather's boat, we all agreed that it was perfect - Liberty!
